Ki Yoga

Ki Yoga at SPMA

Balance out your training and lives with Ki Yoga emphasizing strength, flexibility, endurance and breathing.

SPMA is very fortunate to have two qualified Yoga instructors teaching Ki Yoga. Ki Yoga is a great form of exercise to increase your strength, flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular health. Ki Yoga also increases your self-confidence and overall wellbeing. Ki Yoga believes in strength in your hara (belly), laughter and smiles, positive mind and gratitude.

Ki Yoga is a dynamic yoga, which changes with each session to continually bring harmony and support within. Ki Yoga not only stretches and strengthens the physical body but also strengthens the meridians (energy pathways) of the body to improve wellbeing.

The flow of Ki (energy) in the meridians is the cause behind all symptoms, illnesses and strengths. Our physical and mental health, wellbeing and behaviour are governed by it. Every function and region of our body and every emotion and behavioural tendency can be traced to a specific meridian.

The asanas (postures and stretches) are designed to stimulate these various meridian pathways to improve your strength, flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular health as well as improve your sense of physical confidence and overall wellbeing.

Life in the west can be challenging. It can be exciting and exhilarating but at the same time be riddled with pressures, stresses, frustrations, choices, temptations and obsessions. The average person has faced all of this in one typical working day. It’s no wonder we are eagerly searching for ways to simplify our lives.

To practice Yoga you don’t need to be flexible and strong. It does not matter what level of fitness you currently have and you can start at any age. In fact, the only pre requisite of Yoga is that you can breathe.

Ki Yoga when done on a regular basis has a healing and corrective benefit. To get results you will need to practice Yoga at least two to three times per week. You will create a strong lower back and belly area so you will feel less stressed and more confident. Yoga can also improve your digestion, blood pressure and circulation along with developing great abs, fantastic legs and a good posture.

Our early morning classes are bright, dynamic and invigorating, reflecting the waking needs of that time of day. Our late morning classes are hard working to develop drive and strength, building both power and flexibility.

For information on classes and class times at each of your your SPMA locations please refer to the Timetable page.

When you come in to do a Yoga class wear comfortable loose clothes and bring a towel. Also try to avoid eating about 1-½ hours before a class.

The History of Yoga

Yoga is probably the oldest defined practice of self development. It originally came from India it dates back over five thousand years ago. The Indian sage Pantajali, in his Yoga sutras defines yoga as the control of activities of ones minds. Yoga is founded on the belief of the progress of self awareness. Through the practice of yoga an individual can gain information about physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being. In the course of knowledge and practice of yoga the awareness encourages the individual to adjust and changes the aspects of their nature and become more aware of your attuned and life. The methods of yoga includes ethical disciplines, physical postures, breathing control and as well as meditation. As defined by Patanjali, classical yoga has an eight stages process of spiritual development known as the ‘eight limbs of yoga”. Yoga is not a series of consecutive steps, but a continuous and changing process that helps to clears away the mental obscurities that prevent us from seeing clearly.

Ki Yoga is a fusion between the teaching style of Masahiro Oki, a Japanese yoga master and Shizuto Masunaga, the founder of modern Zen Shiatsu. Combining traditional Hatha Yoga postures with a knowledge of the oriental meridian system has created a highly dynamic form of Yoga.

Ki Yoga uses familiar asanas or postures in a specific remedial way, working on the basis of opening, stretching and strengthening the meridians (the body's energy channel) as opposed to simply working the physical body.
