Last grading of the year

The last gradings of the year will be on December 14 and 15. The chief instructors will inform everyone individually if you are grading.

Annual awards and annual group photo

On Wednesday night, starting at 730pm on December 14, will be the presentation of Adult Competitor of the Year and Adult Most Improved of the Year. We would like all adult students (BJJ and Thai Kickboxing and whether you are grading or not) to attend between 730pm and 800pm for the presentation. It will be followed with the annual group photo. The Kids presentation and annual group photo will be on Thursday December 15 at 4.45pm.

Christmas Party

Our Christmas Party will be held on Friday night on December 16th from 5pm to midnight. Every student will receive an invitation at training.

BJJ Championships at the ISKA World Cup

The SPMA BJJ competition team participated in the ISKA World Cup. Click on tournaments to view the complete tournament report.

Concord Street Fair

SPMA participated in the annual Concord street fair on Sunday October 16 for the fourth year in a row. SPMA had a stall set up and also performed a demonstration on stage. It was a great day and 15,000 people turned out for the event. A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped out including John Perosh, Sari Redzeposki, Adam Assuncao, Rafaelle Lagarto, Chris Bavaro, Alex Squadrito, Tiana Messina, Daniel De Jesus, Jesse Landry, Melaie Kershler, Katrina Spartalis, Dominik Politano and Vince Sorrentino.

Get Active Sydney

On Sunday November 6th SPMA participated for the 3rd year in a row at the Get Active Sydney (GAS) festival, which is run by Fitness First and MBF. GAS is organised to promote sport amongst kids. SPMA spent the eday teaching kids some BJJ and Thai Kickboxing techniques. Thank you to Sari Redzeposki, Matt Dornan and Paul Sinosic for helping out.

Last gradings of the year and Christmas Party

The last gradings of the year will be on December 14 and 15. The SPMA Christmas party will either be on December 16 or 17. We will keep you posted.

Anthony featured in DVD

Anthony is featured in the first volume of a new DVD series about Australian martial arts called “Taste of the Arts Volume 1”. Anthony is one of 11 martial artists featured. SPMA have 10 copies of the DVD for sale. You can also view Anthony’s new highlight clip on our website featuring all of Anthony’s MMA matches to date.

SPMA Liverpool School Grand Opening

A full time academy in Liverpool will be opening soon with classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Thai Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts. Another milestone for SPMA!

SPMA Newsletter October 2005

Timetable change – Please Note

SPMA will be closed for 3 days from Friday October 21 to Sunday October 23. SPMA are running the BJJ competition at the ISKA World Cup (read more about it below) and are using all the mats from the school. Most of the instructors and students will be at the competition in any case. Please note this.

Elvis returns to UFC

SPMA Chief Instructor Elvis Sinosic returned to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships). He faced TUF (The Ultimate Fighter reality TV show) winner Forrest Griffin. Forrest is one of UFC’s biggest stars at the moment. Elvis came out blazing dominating the match early. After a great display by both fighters, Forrest came up with the victory after a referee stoppage. It was a great performance by Elvis even in defeat.

Grant dominates at Spartan

SPMA student Grant Guenther won a unanimous decision in his MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) debut at Spartan 14 on the Gold Coast on October 7th. He fought a very experienced fighter who has had 13 fights and completely dominated the match. Congratulations to Grant and also a big thanks to Gary Edwards and Ben Power for cornering him and supporting him on the weekend.

NSW BJJ Championships

The Machado team came second in the adults teams event and first in the kids teams event in the September 11 event at the University of Sydney. SPMA put in a team of 16 adults and 7 kids.

The adults who won their divisions were Steven Micallef, Ben Cordony, Matt Dornan, Grant Guenther and Micah Kirkwood. Adults who placed 2nd or third were Michelle McComb, Justin Stevenson, Dane Brett and Gary Edwards. Congratulations to the following adults too who competed but did not place were Paul Sinosic, John Breakspear, Derek Roooney, Richard Hornyak, Mac Barin and Jesse Landry.

The kids team was very strong. The kids who won their division were Rafaelle Lagarto, Adam Assuncao and Phillip Ferraro. Congratulations to the other kids who competed but did not place were Daniel Nanchahal, Brandon Thompson, Liam Irving and Sean Irving.

Finally, chief instructor Anthony Perosh fought in the open black belt division finishing 3rd. Congratulations to all the students who competed and a big thanks to all the other students who came to support.

The ISKA World Cup

The next and last BJJ tournament in Sydney for the year is the ISKA World Cup in Sydney on October 22 and 23. Kids will compete on Saturday October 22 and Adults will compete on Sunday October 23.It will be held at the Anne Clarke Centre in Lidcombe. Entry forms can be picked up from the school or downloaded from our website under Tournaments. There will be kids, adults and masters divisions. All divisions will also be split in to belt levels and weight classes. Kids will also be split in to age groups. If you are not competing come down and support the SPMA team!

Concord Street Fair

SPMA will have a stall and also will be performing at the annual Concord Street Fair on Sunday October 16th. SPMA perform at 11.10am (just before Barney!). If you live in the area and have some free time then come down and check us out.

Next tournaments

The next BJJ tournament is the NSW state Championships in Sydney on September 11. It will be held at the University of Sydney Sports & Aquatic Centre. Entry forms can be picked up from the school or downloaded from our website under Tournaments. There will be kids, adults and masters divisions. All divisions will also be split in to belt levels and weight classes. Kids will also be split in to age groups. If you are not competing come down and support the SPMA team!

Next gradings

The next gradings are on September 21 and 22. BJJ students must ensure they have their own gi with one small and one large patch sewn on before they can grade. Thai Kickboxing students must ensure they have their club t-shirt and their own kickboxing equipment (gloves, shin guards, groin guard, mouthguard, handwraps) to grade. Kids also must have their patches on their gi. All the above can be purchased at SPMA. The chief instructors will inform students individually over the next 2 weeks if they are eligible to grade.

Elvis documentary

“Down with the King” is a documentary showing Elvis preparing to fight Roberto Traven at Warriors Realm. It is now available on DVD. You can find out more about it at www.downwiththeking.com. If you are interested in getting a copy, please let us know at the front desk and we will order you a copy. The cost will be $30.

Elvis fights to a draw

Elvis returned from Japan after scoring a draw against Japanese veteran Dajiro Matsui. Elvis had his opponent in danger on many occasions with a number of submission attempts but could not finish him with a tap. Well done Elvis.

Inner West Small Business of the Year Finalist!

SPMA has been nominated as a finalist in the 2005 Inner West Small Business Awards, in the Health and Fitness Industry. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! All finalists now go through anonymous assessments by the organisers. The winner will be announced at the presentation night on July 13th. Anthony & Elvis will be there to hopefully pick up yet another trophy!

Anthony & Elvis overseas between July 6th & July 12th

All classes will continue as normal while Anthony & Elvis are away. SPMA’s senior students who are all government-accredited coaches will take all classes. Elvis is fighting in a Pancrase match in Japan and Anthony is going as his cornerman. We wish Elvis all the best in his fight.

Thanks to the Mayor!!!

A big thanks goes out to Mayor Angelo Tsirekas of Canada Bay Council who wrote a congratulatory letter to all of our 2004 NSW BJJ state champions. It was a great extra surprise for all of our state champions who have put in a lot of hard work.

Another great party

On Sunday July 3rd about 60 students came to celebrate SPMA’s 3rd birthday at the Amber Lounge in Burwood. SPMA plan to have many more as they have just signed a new 3 year lease to stay in Concord and with another option to stay 3 more years! So we won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

The head of Machado BJJ in Australia is holding a seminar on Sunday July 24th at 10am at SPMA. John Will holds only one seminar per year at SPMA. He is a great instructor and his seminars are always very insightful.

Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championships:

New BJJ Grades:

Recently SPMA held an impromptu grading. Congratulations go to Jesse Flarherty for receiving his Blue Belt. Ash Noble was another surprise grading joining the slowly growing ranks of Purple Belts, a fantastic achievement. Well done to both students.

Next BJJ Tournament:

The next tournament is the NSW Machado State Titles to be held on Sunday June 19th at Northside Martial Arts (380 Pittwater Road Manly). There will be divisions for kids, white belts and blue belts. A BBQ will also be available for all competitors.

Next Grading:

The next grading will be held on Wednesday 29th June and Thursday 30th of June. Gradings will be for BJJ, Kickboxing and Kids. Please come along whether you are grading or not, everyone appreciates the support.

SPMA 3rd Birthday:

SPMA turned 3 years old on May 13th 2005. To celebrate we are holding a birthday party on Sunday July 3rd at the Amber Lounge in Burwood. The party commences at 4pm and will run til 10pm. Kids and Families are welcome to attend. If you have any queries, please see us at the front desk.

Elvis fighting in Japan:

Elvis will be travelling to Japan once again for a match in Pancrase. This time he is moving up a division and fighting the No.1 HW (under 100kg) contender. Make sure you come along to class and help Elvis prepare for this event.

May 2005 Newsletter

Abu Dhabi:

Three members from SPMA will be leaving for Los Angeles to compete at the World Submission Grappling Championships on May 28 and 29. Chief Instructor Anthony Perosh, Denis Roberts and Sari Redzeposki all qualified and will be representing Australia with the other 4 Australian qualifiers. We wish them all the best.

Next BJJ comp:

The next BJJ tournament is the Sydney Challenge to be held on May 22 at the University of Sydney Sports & Aquatic Centre. It is the first gi tournament run by the NSWBJJ Federation. The NSW BJJ Championships have been put back and will now be on September 11.

Tourny results:

The ISKA Autumn Championships were held on Sunday May 1st at the Sports Centre at Sydney Olympic Park. 9 kids and 2 adults competed.

In the under 30kg kids the placings from 1st to 4th all from SPMA are Sabrina Nanchahal, Daniel Nanchahal, Dominic Nanchahal and Brandon Thompson. In the under 40kg kids division Philip Ferraro came first with 4 wins and Adam Assuncao 3rd with 2 wins and 1 loss. Alexa Galanis and Alexa Sarai put in great performances too in the under 40kg division. And Maria Galanis took out 1st place in her kids division with 1 win and 1 loss.

In the adults Peter Barabanera placed second with 1 win and 1 loss and Jerome Pride put in a good performance in his two matches.

Birthday party:

SPMA turns 3 years old on May 13th 2005!!! Due to tournament commitments SPMA will throw a big birthday bash on Saturday July 2nd. Put it in your diaries as we would love to see a lot of students there to help us celebrate.

April 2005 Newsletter

2nd Annual Australian Submission Grappling Championships:

Team SPMA and Team Machado put in a great performance on the day finishing 2nd overall in the teams event on Sunday March 13th. There were a lot of stand out individual performances. Click here to read the full tournament report.

ISKA NSW Open:

Three adults and ten kids from SPMA competed at this event on March 20th. Click here to read the full tournament report.

Warriors Realm:

SPMA student Jean Frederick Dutrait won his match in the first round after the referee stopped the fight in the first round after “Fred” was unleashing punches from the mount position. Well done Fred!

Australian Wrestling Championships:

SPMA Wrestling instructor Hassan Shahsavan won all of his matches in the U/74kg Greco-Roman class at the Australian Championships held in Melbourne on February 26/27. Congratulations to Hassan.

Next BJJ tournament:

SPMA in the news:

SPMA was featured twice in the local newspapers in March. The first in the District News with an article and photo about the South Pacific Submission Grappling Trials. The second in the Inner Western Courier with an article and photo about Thai Kickboxing to coincide with the release of the Thai Kickboxing movie Ong Bak. If you missed it look out for it soon on SPMA’s notice board.

Anthony Perosh is again featured in the April edition of Blitz magazine in the technique workshop.

Chief Instructor Anthony Perosh represented Will Machado BJJ Australia and attended a 3-hour Jiu Jitsu seminar held in Sydney on March 19th, which was run by the Australian Jiu Jitsu Federation. There were 6 instructors who taught a 30 minute session each to the other instructors and students present. Anthony Perosh taught and attack and escape from the mount position during his session. Other instructors taught techniques such as using a bo (4 foot stick), samurai sword, knife self defence and various other self defence techniques. This seminar was organised to expose the techniques used by the different styles of jiu jitsu.

Movie Night:

Over 30 students attended the SPMA movie night at Rhodes Shopping Centre to watch the Thai Kickboxing movie night. After watching the movie the chief instructors of SPMA have decided to add the technique of running and then sliding under a 4WD while doing the splits to the Thai Kickboxing syllabus.

Coaching qualifications:

SPMA are very proud to announce that nine of their senior students are now accredited coaches (level 1) recognised by the Australian Sports Commission. They are Alex Sinclair, Ben Power, Dean Vella, Ash Noble, Victor Fox, Peter Sardelich, Michael Wohlfiel, John Breakspear and Matt Dornan. Congratulations!

New Yoga class:

A new Yoga class has started on Saturdays from 830am to 930am. Qualified Ki Yoga instructor Stefanie Allison runs it. The other Yoga sessions are on Tuesday and Fridays from 10am to 11am. All students who are on the unlimited membership can attend Yoga too at no extra cost.

New kids class:

The 6-10 year old class is over flowing. A new 6-10 year old class will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm to 4.50pm commencing on Tuesday 5/4/05. This class is already filling fast!

March 2005 Newsletter

South Pacific Submission Grappling Trials:

Team SPMA reined supreme at the trials winning three out of seven divisions. About 300 spectators watched chief instructor Anthony Perosh win the Under 99kg division winning both of his matches by submission. Denis Roberts stole the show with a suplex to win the Over 99kg division. And Sari Redzeposki showed great technique to submit all 3 of her larger opponents to win the Under 60kg female division. All three have now qualified for the World Championships and won and all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles in May to compete.

Competition was tough as this is the only tournament where all belt levels are mixed in.

Congratulations goes out to everyone from SPMA who competed including chief instructor Elvis Sinosic, Alex Sinclair, Victor Fox, Ash Noble, Ben Mallia, Dee Hooper, Dane Brett, Kahu Cooper and Martin Christenson.

Congratulations also goes out to Stacey Cartwright from our affiliate club in Perth who won the Over 60kg female division by submitting her much bigger opponent.

Check out our gallery soon for loads of photos. A DVD is also available for sale for $10 at the school. There are not very many copies available so get in quick. Very special thanks to SPMA student Ray Anthony for putting the DVD together. The DVD consists of all SPMA students in action plus a couple of highlight videos put to music. We are also planning on putting the highlight videos on the website.

Next MMA show:

Warriors Realm is on Saturday March 12th on the Gold Coast. SPMA student Jean-Frederic Dutrait is fighting on the show. We wish him all the best in the fight.

Next tournament:

The next BJJ comp will be held on Sunday 13/3/05. It is the 2nd annual Australian No Gi BJJ Championships to be held at Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre. Students who will be competing in this tournament can continue to train in no gi. Entry forms must be in by Wednesday 9/3/05.

ISKA is running their next tournament on March 20th at the Whitlam Centre in Liverpool. There are grappling divisions for any students wanting to compete and to gain extra tournament experience.

The first NSW BJJ circuit tournament will be on May 1st.

Next grading:

The next Brazilain Jiu Jitsu, Thai Kickboxing and Kids grading will be on March 30 and 31. The chief instructors will notify all students individually if they are grading.

Next SPMA get together:

SPMA has organised a movie night to go and see the new Thai Kickboxing movie “Ong Bak”. Anyone interested in going to see it with us can come to the school and pick up an invitation with all the details.

Blitz Magazine:

Chief Instructor Anthony Perosh is featured in the March 2005 (Vol 19 No. 3) edition of Blitz martial arts magazine. Anthony is in the technique workshop on page 63 demonstrating a “Pre-emptive defence against an imminent attack”.

New Zealand Seminar:

Elvis Sinosic spent a weekend in New Zealand attending a BJJ tournament and teaching a BJJ seminar at Geoff Grant’s school, which is a Will Machado affiliate.

Thai Kickboxing and MMA equipment:

A reminder that students who have been training for one month or more must have their own equipment or they will have to hire it from SPMA. Students can buy gloves, shin guards and everything else they need direct from SPMA.

February 2005 Newsletter

South Pacific Submission Grappling Trials:

Come and support Team SPMA on Saturday 19/2/05 at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Halls on Grande Parade at Sydney Olympic Park as they compete for a place in the World Championships held in the USA in May this year.

Team SPMA has 12 competitors in it headed by chief instructors Anthony Perosh and Elvis Sinosic. Students competing include Sari Redzeposki, Alex Sinclair, Victor Fox, Ash Noble, Dee Hooper, Ben Mallia, Dane Brett, Kahu Cooper, Martin Christenson and Dennis Roberts. Competition starts at 11am and is $5 for spectators.

No classes on Saturday:

Due to the tournament thee will be no classes on Saturday 19/2/05.

After Party!!!

Everyone is welcome to come and join us at the after party. You can bring your partners and family and kids (there is a games room for the kids). No need to RSVP, just turn up if you are free. The after party will commence at 6pm (or after the tournament finishes) on Saturday 19/2/05. Pick up an invitation at the school for all the details.

Party Number 2!!!

For all fight fans SPMA are showing the latest UFC, Pride and K-1 shows at Anthony's place on Sunday 20/2/05 starting at 530pm. It is BYO food and drink. Alternatively, bring some cash and we will put in a big order for Concord's famous pizza and ribs. Pick up an invitation at the school for all the details.

Back to gi training:

After 6 weeks of no gi training we will be going back to gi training as of Monday 21/2/05. For all new students it is time to put in your gi orders.

SPMA January 2005 Newsletter

We are back!
SPMA are back in full swing. We hope everyone had a fun and safe Christmas and New Year. It is now time to get back in shape and make thise new year’s resolutions come true. 2005 promises to be SPMA’s biggest yet.

Open Mat class extended:
There has been no change to the timetable except that Open Mat has replaced Self Defence on Fridays at 6pm and will finish at 8pm.

Extra BJJ classes for beginners:
The Monday BJJ class at 6pm is now for students who are white belt with one stripe and are going to compete in tournaments this year to give them extra practice.

No gi training:
Commencing on Monday 10/1/05 all BJJ classes will be no gi in preparation for the 2005 ADCC South Pacific trials to be held on Saturday February 19. There are 5 male weight divisions and 2 female weight divisions. The winner of each division qualifies and wins an all expenses paid trip to the World Championships to be held in May in the USA. Normal gi classes will commence again on Monday 21/2/05.

No gi uniform:
All students will be expected to wear a club t-shirt or rash top to train in during the no gi BJJ classes. Students also have the option of wearing SPMA board shorts or tights or gi pants. All uniform requirements are available for purchase at SPMA.

If any student changes their address, phone number or email address then please let us know as we like to keep accurate records.
